I was 16 when Bill Clinton was running in the 1992 Democratic primary. My friend and I found out he was staying in a hotel a few towns over, ahead of the Connecticut primary, and we camped out in the hotel lobby in the morning, hoping to jog with him. But we were so nervous when he came out of the elevator that all we managed were some shy hellos. He was wearing (I am pretty sure) a Lakers t-shirt and as he passed us he said (I definitely remember this), "Hi, boys" -- making direct eye contact and speaking so gently and affectionately that we blushed. In even that brief moment we were totally starstruck. The friend I was with went on to work on Obama's Senate campaign twelve years later and then followed him to the White House.

I reckon if Luke Dittrich read your features on the Galapagos, or the Saudi comedy festival, or The Genius Myth etc he’d learn a thing or two as well!
