Your shout out for the Don Camillo stories made me very happy. They have stayed with me since I read them as a youngish child raiding my parents’ library when I ran out of Biggles books. I now realise how lucky I was in my parents’ wide range of literature that few of my contemporaries seem aware of - and of the comparatively small amount of Young Adult books at the time that forced me to forage among the more grownup authors...

Biggles! Now there’s a flashback. I remember a time when I had strong opinions on the Sopwith Camel.

With nearly a hundred Biggles books, Capt WE Johns did stretch the franchise (a bit like the end credits of 22 Jump Street) - Biggles goes to school, Biggles Foreign Legionnaire, Biggles in Mexico, Biggles in the Underworld…!

Is “donating to sex workers” a euphemism?

Even better than the guinea pig’s hysterectomy - Julius the tortoise won our hearts – then died of a broken penis (Guardian 25 July). You really couldn’t make it up

Thanks for the crossword suggestion! That was great fun, and my son came in from walking the dogs just for the fun part at the end.
