Actually I’ve just realised that the default job role I used in my Japanese lessons was ‘keirishi’ which translated to ‘public accountant’. And I’m fairly sure that a combination of Keir and Rishi would be a public accountant. With great hair.
Like the Kirsch piece, but the whole "middle aged writers unsettled by younger writers" thing isn't all that remarkable given that writers since at least Turgenev have been banging that drum. Dare I say it, but his thesis could itself be evidence of the same narcissism he references in his piece.
The only Japanese phrase I can remember is ‘Denwa bango wa nan ban desu ka’ which I never got to use in Tokyo
