The Satanism story put me in mind of a favourite newspaper headline. Story about someone in the Royal Navy who claimed to have been discriminated against on grounds of his Satanist beliefs. Headline (Telegraph, I think): Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.

Thank you so much for the Wimsey link. Sayers is fascinating. The first time I heard about the secret son I probably spat out my cornflakes, and actually rang my daughter...called Harriet, not all coincidentally. Harriet Vane played on TV by Harriet Walter...I was double-infected!

That emoji article was great.. but still why the hell are there a dozen emojis for sushi and all its variants, and only one emoji for wine 🍷 ... DOES WHITE WINE NOT EXIST?? It’s the beverage of choice for half the worlds women, wtaf? Where is this Karen privilege that we western women are supposed to have I ask you. Gah.

I don't agree that the latest Mick Herron 'sorely misses the presence of Jackson Lamb.' I mean, I miss him, yes, but the Slough House novels were getting a bit too formulaic for my liking and that single character couldn't hold the last one together for me, an avid MH reader. I think 'The Secret Hours' has a lot more verve to and zip to it because the author's not constrained by location and cast. It would be good to read a Slough House prequel focused on Lamb, though. I agree wholeheartedly about the Cormoran Strike book; in spite of the very awkward formatting on my Kindle - I was on holiday, and otherwise it would have taken up half my weight allowance. She knows how to weave a yarn, that Robert Galbraith.

That's a fair cop, there was always a risk that it would become like later series of House -- a brilliant character devolves into soundbites and schtick.

I wrote this before I had finished the book. Now I have finished the book. Know what I mean?

Ha yes, I was in a similar position and got a text from a friend going “are you sure he’s not in it?”

I am in awe of Mick Herron. That was a very satisfying book. *Spoiler alert for anyone who hasn't yet read "The Secret Hours"* I thought that the way that he filled in who Jackson Lamb was and what he must have been like as a younger man was masterly. And Molly's backstory too. And First Desk's. Such delicacy! MH has certainly put to bed any notions I may have harboured of wishing that I had been a spook. That degree of moral ambiguity would have done me in.

The TST article is pure gold. I don’t know what my favorite joke was, it’s definitely down to “Scientology for mall goths” or Doug.

The emoji article 🤌🫃📟🤎🈺

(i looked and unfortunately there is no pentagram emoji👎🤦‍♂️)
